McCoy was one of only two Mariners prospects to enjoy a 20/20 season, bashing 21 homers and swiping 22 bases -- both career highs. Let me make this point abundantly clear, if there were a clear, cheap pathway to improving the roster at this stage, I would have no issue with Seattle pursuing it.
So if the Mariners have World Series hopes of their own in 2023, they need to find a way past the Astros. And to be honest, they have a pretty tough team to contend with there in Houston – and an improved Texas team, as well. If there’s one thing we know about Jerry Dipoto, even though I might think that they’re close to being ready for the season, he probably disagrees and will likely make another couple of trades. I think Wong (as a left-handed hitter) addresses some of the issues with a lack of balance… Teoscar Hernández, we’ve talked about him, I’m a big fan of his. I think he will really address some of the issues they had maybe about being able to hit the big home runs and drive in runs against really good pitching. Adding that player to this Mariners team is how they take the next step from good to great, as one disgruntled 710 AM host put it recently. Bogaerts similarly offered a pathway to massive stability, as well as few of the associations that might have been a dealbreaker with regards to Correa and his involvement with the Trash Can Astros. However you may feel about the decisions of the M’s front office and ownership group this winter (and I of course hope you’ll feel closer to how I do by the end of this article), this is a rather unimpeachable starting ground.
Rizzo has repeated levels twice in the past four seasons -- he spent 2018 and 2019 in Modesto, a High-A club at the time -- and is currently a free agent. So here we are, with a club that I am overwhelmingly excited about and yet exceedingly frustrated with. I do not wish to rob anyone of their well-earned excitement for the coming season, which should be an exciting one.
